The Conservatory at Gulfshore Playhouse

John is currently the Conservatory Manager at Gulfshore Playhouse after 3 seasons as Education Associate. Key duties include:
  • Directing youth productions
  • Stage managing youth productions
  • Strategic planning for the dramatic expansion of the on-site, in-school, and community-based education initiatives of the organization
  • Advising middle and high school theatre teachers in the implementation of curriculum and the management of their drama clubs
  • Teaching in-school residencies (grades K-12), both in theatre curriculum and core curriculum through drama-based pedagogy. Key topics include literacy (story recall, elements of a story), heightened texts (Shakespearean performance and design), geography, mathematics (currency fluency, fractions, coordinate plane, data assessment)​
  • Providing educational materials for patrons through Performance Guides (example here) and Pre-Show Discussions
  • Creating the Story Explorers creative drama program, including training teaching artists in developing, planning, implementing, and sharing creative drama pedagogy
Graduate Teaching Associate at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro

Courses Taught:
  • Directing I (3 semesters)
    • Western Realism
    • Core texts: Gloria by Branden Jacobs Jenkins, Sweat by Lynn Nottage, Dinner with Friends by Donald Margulies 
    • Course objectives: script analysis; scoring (actions-based Stanislavski approach with objectives, tactics, and obstacles); crafting a ground plan; casting, rehearsing, and presenting a five minute piece of contemporary Western realism
  • Directing II (Teaching Assistant, 1 semester)​
    • ​Facilitated a unit on crafting ground plans for non-proscenium staging
    • Facilitated a unit on site-specific performance
  • Drama in Education (Guest Lecturer)
    • ​Facilitated reflective discussions related to visiting a third grade classroom in order to prepare for a process drama residency
  • Theatre in Education (Guest Lecturer)
    • ​Developed and implemented a workshop engaging undergraduate students in Moment Work, a style of devising crafted by the Tectonic Theatre Project
  • Acting Styles (Guest Lecturer)
    • ​Led a workshop on the psycho-physical acting philosophies of Michael Chekhov and how they relate to puppetry performance

Education Intern at Lexington Children's Theatre

In the 2019-2020 season, John worked as an education intern at Lexington Children's Theatre. During this internship, John's duties included:
  • Directing weeklong Performance Workshops with students age 8-18 (A Series of Unfortunate Events, The Wizard of Oz, The Lost Hero and Percy Jackson, Peter Pan, Shakespeare Presents: Macbeth)
  • Developing curriculum based on the teachings of Stella Adler for students age 11-13 (see his lesson plans here)
  • Teach core classes in movement, character development, voice, and ensemble to students ages 8-16
  • Teaching theme-based role drama camps for students ages 6-7 (How I Became a Pirate, Harry Potter, Night at the Museum, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory)
  • Teaching story-based role drama camps for students ages 4-5 (Click, Clack, Moo, Cows That Type)​
  • Assistant Directing the main stage production of Holes which featured a multi-generational cast
  • Creating dramaturgical displays for the main stage productions of la ofrenda and Holes

Teaching Artist with the Moundville Arts Experience

​In January of 2019, John was part of a team of teaching artists from Samford University that pioneered a relationship between Samford's Theatre for Youth department and the Hale County School System in Moundville, Alabama. This school system does not have any of its own arts education, so for many students involved with the program, this was their first opportunity to explore the arts as a participant rather than a spectator. You can read an article about the residency here. During this residency, John's responsibilities included:
  • Teaching an introduction to directing course to 6th and 7th grade students that covered the basics of stage composition to work toward creating dynamic stage pictures (see his lesson plans here)
  • Leading first grade students through a creative retelling of Zoogie Boogie Fever! by Sujean Rim utilizing puppets and movement
  • Assistant teaching an acting masterclass to 6th and 7th grade students, where he helped guide students through the process of creating their own world within which their "open scenes" took place, as well as assisted in the development of character
  • Assisted in the devising of an original play based on the myth of Pandora's Box, performed by the 6th and 7th grade students
  • Led physical warm-ups to prepare the students to exercise their bodies, voices, and imaginations
  • Led end-of-the-day rituals in order to reflect on the day, determine if objectives were met, and to continue to facilitate the formation of a safe transitional space for his students

​Education Intern at the Omaha Theater Company for Young People (The Rose Theater)

In the Summer of 2018, John completed the Teaching Artist internship with the Omaha Theater Company for Young People. During this internship, John had the opportunity to:
  • Co-direct the premiere production of The Giant Who Chased the Moon and Other Balinese Tales and a production of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. ​
  • Solo teach an acting workshop that focused on Konstantin Stanislavski's Circles of Attention and how it influences Non-Verbal Acting technique (see his lesson plan here) in the conservatory program (ages 13-18). 
  • Co-teach workshops on teaching artistry, improvisation, and devising in the conservatory program (ages 13-18).
  • Co-teach an introductory course to Directing to high school students, which culminated in his students having the opportunity to direct younger students in short scenes.
  • Co-teach creative drama camps based on Moana, Beauty and the Beast, Harry Potter, Percy Jackson & the Olympians, and Disney films.

Imagine! Summer Theatre Camp

In the summer of 2017, John served as a counselor for Samford University's annual Imagine! Summer Theatre Camp. John worked with 13-17 year old students, and over the course of the camp, John had the opportunity to:
  • Teach a directing elective that covered the basics of stage composition​
  • Lead masterclasses in acting technique and approaching Shakespearean texts
  • Assistant teach masterclasses in improvisation
  • Assistant teach an elective in Musical Theatre Dance
  • Assistant direct an abridged production of A Midsummer Night's Dream
  • Lead small groups of students in camp activities, such as scavenger hunts and physical challenges
  • Lead morning warm-ups for all campers, ages 5-17
