The Giant Who Chased the Moon and Other Balinese Tales by Stephanie Jacobson, Kendra Kahl, and Paige Wolfe
The Omaha Theatre Company for Young People (The Rose)
During his internship at the Omaha Theater Company for Young People, John's primary directing project was working with the four-week conservatory program (ages 13-18) on the premiere production of The Giant Who Chased the Moon and Other Balinese Tales, a collection of three adaptations of classic Indonesian folklore and mythology, all of which utilized shadow puppetry in unique ways. The Giant Who Chased the Moon featured elaborate shadow masks to identify silhouettes. A Tale of Two Sisters: The Beauty of Bawang and Suna used the actors' silhouettes to create environments, and animal rod puppets narrated the story. Rama's Loyalty was stylistically the most similar to wayang shadow puppetry with traditional rod puppets.
